As the Toronto Fringe Festival begins its 20th edition (continuingto July 13), we look back at some past hits that found successbeyond the Fringe.
This is a Play (1992), by Daniel MacIvor. Revived in 1998 by Solar Stage as alunch-hour presentation at Scotia Plaza's concourse level, and in2001 by Winnipeg's Theatre Anywhere as part of a double bill withRick Chafe's Zac and Speth . Daniel MacIvor has enjoyed a successful career as aperformer/author in theatre, film and television.
Puppets Who Kill (1995), by John Pattison. Remounted in the spring of 1996 at theFactory Studio Theatre in Toronto. Played the Montreal and WinnipegFringe Festivals to much success and critical acclaim. Pattisonproduced a Comedy Network television show with the same name in2002 that ran until 2006.
The Drowsy Chaperone (1999), music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert. Went on to a slightlybigger stage at Toronto's Theatre Passe Muraille before beingmounted as a Mirvish production at the Winter Garden Theatre. Asuccessful production was staged in Los Angeles before it opened onBroadway in 2006. Won five Tony awards.
Da Kink in My Hair (2001), by Trey Anthony. Expanded to the Theatre Passe Muraille in2003, it was nominated for four Dora Awards. Mirvish Productionsmounted a larger production at the Princess of Wales Theatre in2005. Productions also staged in San Diego and London. Adapted fora Global television show in 2007.
One-Man Star Wars Trilogy (2002), written and performed by Charles Ross. Enjoyedinternational success after the festival, and is currently on tourin the U.K. Show is in high demand along with Ross's subsequentFringe show, One Man Lord of the Rings (2004). Included a successful off-Broadway run in 2005, with thetwo shows alternating. Ross was also employed by Lucasfilmpresenting his act at official Star Wars events.
Job: The Hip Hop Musical (2002), written and performed by Eli Batalion and Jerome Saibil.Performed in more than 15 North American cities in both festivalsand regular theatre season, picking up numerous awards, includingMontreal English Critics Circle Award for Best New Play in 2002.
SARSical (2005), by the Rumoli Bros. and Waylen Miki. Remounted in 2006 atthe Factory Studio Theatre. Miki won a Dora award for his music.
Bash'd (2007), by Chris Craddock and Nathan Cuckow. The gay rap opera wasa hit in Toronto as well as in New York's Fringe Festival. An"industry reading" was held in March 2008 to help raisethe $500,000 needed to open the show off-Broadway this summer.
