Treats to keep the caged animals from being bored like when theycut up banana stumps for the elephants.

"Honestly a juicy piece of banana tree is like chocolate to anelephant they love it," volunteer gardener Nalani Boon said, "Theyare just so gentle. They are reaching up to take it pick it out ofyour hand and have a little snack." The Boon's cart is filled withtheir treats like papayas and greens and is happily received by the100-year-old Galapagos tortoises. "Yummy Manoa lettuce, myfavorite. I like to see them eat what I produce," Nalani said.

Zoo goers are amazed the snacks are grown at the zoo.

"I think that's great -- so ecological. They have to feed theanimals every day. How thrifty is that?" Mililani Resident GingerAnana said.

The zoo's garden is "green" in every sense with fertilizer thatcomes from the zoo animals' manure and composting in plant bedsmade of recycled plastic. The garden bench is made from recycledplastic milk jugs. The Boon's are eager to share their knowledge ofcomposting and food growing with visitors.

The Boons said right now they have enough help in the Zoo'svolunteer garden. But if other gardeners want to help with zoolandscaping, please call the Zoo Society at 926-3191. Volunteercoordinator, Barbara Thacker, said she's eager to sign people up.
