$43.7 million carrot drew in HP

The state lured Hewlett-Packard Co. to Conway with more than $35.4 million in incentives, plus an $8.3 million local package that promised such perks as help finding jobs for some employees’ spouses, documents show.

Together, state and local incentives offered to the Fortune 500 company total more than $43.7 million, according to documents released under the Arkansas Freedom of Information Act by the Arkansas Economic Development Commission and the Conway Development Corp.

"No one likes the incentives, but if you’re going to be in the ballgame, it’s a necessary part,” said Joe Holmes, spokesman for the Little Rock-based Arkansas Economic Development Commission.
