Rose of Sharon is a late bloomer

Tag : dry hibiscus flowers

If you are looking for a large shrub that will bloom its littleheart out in late summer, thrive in full sunshine and actuallythank a deer for munching its branches during the countless weeksof winter, may I introduce you to Hibiscus syriacus, aka Rose ofSharon or Shrub Althea.

Its history dates back to biblical times; it is noted in the book"Song of Songs," written by King Solomon. Family lineage connectsit as shirttail cousins with other members of the mallow family, including cotton, hollyhock, okra and - believe it or not - evenmarshmallows.

Rose of Sharon will bloom come August and continue into Septemberwith large 4- to 5-inch papery-looking blossoms in shades of pink, blue, purple, white or red. Some come with contrasting colored"eyes" and there's even one that blooms three separate colors atonce; red, pale pink and a blue-purple, named "Tri-color."

With so many cultivars available, color isn't the only choicegardeners must make. You'll need to contemplate whether you prefera single, double or ruffled flower. In addition, some nurseriesoffer a single-stemmed specimen that has a growth habit more like asmall ornamental tree than large shrub. So many decisions!

Hardy in zones 5 through 8, the Rose of Sharon can grow to 8 to 12feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, so this is one large shrub. Itshould be given plenty of space to stretch its branches. This shrubis usually vase shaped, resembling a "V" when fully grown; narrowat the base and broad at the top, providing a nice vertical outlinefor the winter landscape.

A moderate grower, it's also pollution-tolerant, which is whyyou'll find these shrubs used extensively in city and commerciallandscapes. They thrive in a well-drained, rich, organic soil withgood moisture retention that neither dries out nor remains soggy.Native to India and East Asia, this beauty of the late summerlandscape is the national flower of Korea.
