Ingrown toenails and fungal infections are the two most commonproblems with toenails. By caring for your nails properly, you canprobably avoid both. While some people are actually born withingrown toenails, most people develop them through neglect. Nailsshould always be cut straight across, rather than curved to fit theshape of the toe. When trimming your nails, be careful not to cutthem too short.

This can irritate the sensitive skin beneath thenail. Pick shoes that have enough room for your toes; shoes thatpinch toes together can cause the nails to press into the delicateskin. If necessary, inserting a tiny piece of cotton in the cornerof the nail may cushion its effect on the toe. Fungus demands amoist location in which to grow.

By washing your feet daily anddrying them thoroughly, you don't give fungus a place to start.Commercial creams can stop fungus in the early stages, but if itdoesn't clear up within a few weeks an authority in foot careshould be consulted. For more information concerning nail care, contact a foot specialist in your area.
