Steps to growing a blue-ribbon pumpkin

[2008-7-8]

Tag: pumpkin seed

The Augusta County Fair is still weeks away (early August). Pumpkin growers, however, should be planting during the next two weeks to try for the best pumpkin possible. Follow these tips for a possible blue-ribbon winner:

Start with the right variety

The genetic make-up of the seed determines the potential size of a pumpkin. Regardless of how well you cultivate, fertilize and water a standard Halloween variety such as Howden or Connecticut Field, the pumpkin will only grow as large as its genetic potential allows. For a giant pumpkin, I strongly suggest the Dill's Atlantic Giant variety. With modern plant breeding, it is not uncommon to harvest pumpkins weighing more than 600 pounds.

Plant in late May

In order to reach peak size just prior to the county fair, plant pumpkin seeds before May 28. Protect from frost.

Use the richest soil in the garden

Pumpkins are heavy feeders, sucking up nutrients from the soil like a teenager drinking a milkshake. Avoid locations with heavy clay. Roots grow fast, so make sure that soil is deeply tilled and loose. Test soil to ensure a pH of 6.5 to 7. Mix composted cow or horse manure into the soil prior to planting. Sow seeds a half-inch deep and water well to ensure germination.
