The Blue Seeds Make Theatrical Debut
[2008-4-16]
Music writers often describe a new group by comparing them to an established outfit. That's a trickier proposition when classifying Montreal indie-folk quintet The Blue Seeds and their eponymous debut record, considering the group's primary influences are based more in movies than music.
"The record has a bit of a road movie theme," says guitarist and main songwriter Francois Dufault. "The way we developed the lyrics and the arrangements, we started with a character and then we created an ambience around it."
Dufault produced the record and says it was important for it to have a unifying theme centred around thoughts of escape.
The group formed in 2004 after singer Amelie Laflamme responded to an ad placed by Dufault. The band — who also include drummer Marc Chartrain, bassist Patrick Hamilton and guitarist Roger Miron — released an EP six months later.
"The EP was meant to be a demo," says Dufault. "We needed the time to develop a little bit more and to keep writing songs so we could make the record we wanted to make."
Three of the EP's songs appear on the new album, though they were re-recorded to reflect the band's steady maturation process.
"We were very, I think, Americana on the EP," says Dufalut. "We've brought a bit of an indie pop sensibility to go along with our folk influences."
The Blue Seeds began recording the full-length in late 2006. Keeping with Dufault's vision of capturing the travelling experience, they spent 10 days laying down vocals in Italy with pianist Dustin O'Halloran, who's known mostly for his work in films such as Marie Antoinette. The rest of the album — including the lush arrangements and Laflamme's deep, seductive vocals — were recorded in four days at Montreal's Masterkut studio. Mixing was completed last summer.
The Blue Seeds were recent recipients of a boost from iTunes Canada after "My Fair Weather Friend" was chosen as the online store's single of the week and was downloaded 22,000 times.
"I'm not sure how they choose it," says Dufault of the process. "I think they listen to all the new records and pick the one they like best. It's a nice bonus, because it means 22,000 people in Canada who didn't know the band now do."
The Blue Seeds will perform at Montreal's CISM 89.1 FM on Thursday and play Toronto's Gladstone Hotel on April 20.
