Plum Island house tour a huge success
To the editor:
The 2008 PITA Plum Island House Tour was held on Saturday, Sept. 6,and was a huge success. 2008 is the second year that PITA has runthis house tour and I guess we have perfected the art because thepeople who bought tickets were so enthusiastic about all aspects ofthe event that it made us feel we got it right. The owners of thesix homes on the tour graciously allowed approximately 130 visitorsto view/enjoy their homes. A big attraction for this event is thepresence of the owners who share interesting stories, and oftenpictures of renovation projects, about their homes. Thiswillingness to share their stories satisfies our curiosity abouthow they achieved the very personalized look to each home on thetour. A special thanks to Kathy and Bill Barrett, 42 SouthernBlvd., for allowing us to serve refreshments in their home. Theweather wasn't great but at least it wasn't raining, which was abig plus. We added one-half hour to the tour this year to allow formore time in each home, and that worked out very well as iteliminated that slightly rushed feeling from 2007. We also added athird bus but sadly needed to increase the ticket price from $20 to$25 as the cost of the buses had increased. However, that didn'tseem to affect our sale of tickets, for which we were grateful.
Many thanks to all who helped us advertise this importantfundraiser. The Daily News and The Current ran wonderful articles, and WNBP gave us excellent coverage. Advertising is so important;all this advertising help was a huge boost to the success of theevent. Dave Williamson of Plum Island again allowed us to use hisparking lot free of charge. Thank you, Dave. The Salter Bus Companysupplied the buses and the very professional, intrepid drivers whowheeled around our narrow roads with great confidence. Each bus hada volunteer docent who helped the driver find the easiest way toeach home, making sure all people got on the bus in a timely mannerand just generally ensured the smooth running of the event. Sept.5, 2009, is the date for next year's tour, and we hope to see youthere.
