Agriculture Commissioner Roger Johnson has issued a special localneeds (SLN) registration to Nufarm Americas, Inc., allowing the useof Polaris Herbicide to control saltcedar on certain lands that maybe grazed or cut for hay.

"No effective control methods are available for lands near surfacewater that may be grazed or hayed," Johnson said Thursday."Non-chemical methods are not an option because of the expense andthe difficulty in removing deep-rooted saltcedar plants."

Johnson said the SLN registration specifies application "for thepurpose of water conservation and restoration of wildlife habitatand riparian areas," and he said he is confident the situationmeets the criteria of a special local need.

The SLN labeling allows ground or aerial application at a rate oftwo quarts per acre or as a 1 percent solution for spot treatment.

Livestock must be removed areas to be treated and no grazing isallowed for 30 days after treatment. If livestock are not removedfrom treated land, they cannot be sold for slaughter for at least30 days after the land has been treated. No hay can be cut for atleast 30 days after treatment.

Users must follow all restrictions, precautions and directions onboth the SLN and full product labeling, and have a copy of the SLNlabeling in their possession during application.

The SLN registration expires Sept. 1, 2013. The registrationcomplements one issued by Johnson last year for the BASF Corp.product Habitat. This SLN registration is being issued to providelandowners with another formulation of the same active ingredient.

Saltcedar was first discovered in North Dakota in 2001, along theYellowstone River. It has since spread the length of the MissouriRiver and is found in other parts of the state.

An aggressive, invasive weed that is a prolific seed producer, saltcedar outcompetes native vegetation for resources, quicklycreating a monoculture. Saltcedar is a heavy water user, withreports of a single plant using 200 gallons of water per day.

Saltcedar is one of North Dakota's 12 noxious weeds.
