Canada: Vegetable fungicide offers new chemistry
Syngenta Crop Protection has picked up what's known as a "NAFTAlabel" for registration of a new fungicide for vegetable cropsacross Canada. The company's Canadian wing on Friday announced theregistration of Revus, which it said protects against oomycetefungi in crops including potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, brassicavegetables, bulb vegetables, cucurbit vegetables, leafy vegetablesand grapes.
Syngenta bills Revus as the first mandelamide fungicide on themarket, combining mandipropamid with a unique "LOK+FLO" technology.Upon application, mandipropamid locks (LOK) tightly to the waxycuticle of treated leaves, quickly becoming rainfast andestablishing a barrier to prevent fungi from taking hold.
Meanwhile, the company said, a steady supply of fungicide entersthe leaf, flowing (FLO) through the inner tissue by translaminaractivity to protect both sides of the leaf with a long-lastingreservoir of the active ingredient.
"Revus is an excellent product for resistance management when usedin a rotation with other classes of fungicides that are labeled forthe same disease," said Wayne Bennett, the company's brand managerfor Eastern Canada, in its release. "Revus providesanti-germination effects, which means disease spores land on theplant and the product prevents them from germinating. When used ina preventative program, this can dramatically reduce the level ofnew infections in a field."
In Canada, Bennett said, "it often takes years to expand a label tothis magnitude.
"We are particularly pleased with the collaboration efforts betweenthe Canadian and U.S. regulators which resulted in a product with aNAFTA label," he said. "This allows free movement of Revus betweenCanada and the U.S. and ensures Canadian growers have access to thesame tools as their neighbours to the south."
